Narok county department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries has kicked – off the countywide vaccination of cattle against Foot and Mouth Disease.
The exercise, that began in earnest on the 8th of October, 2025 at Nkoilale Trading Center in Siana Ward and at Keiyian Farmers Cooperative Society grounds in Keiyian Ward, was graced by His Excellency Governor Patrick Keturet Ole Ntutu accompanied by the Director of Veterinary Services Dr. Allan Azegele, Narok County Commissioner Mr. Kipkech Lotiatia, MP for Kilgoris Hon. Julius Sunkuli among several other leaders.
This countywide vaccination initiative aims at protecting livestock against notifiable diseases, with emphasis on Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). “The immediate priority is the vaccination of livestock against notifiable diseases, with particular focus on Foot and Mouth Disease,” said Governor Ntutu during the launch of the exercise.
The Governor also issued dummy cheques to 16 cooperative societies under the Enterprise Development Grant, funded by the County Government in collaboration with the National Agriculture Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP).
At Keiyian, Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu issued dummy cheques to six cooperative societies. The funds will support E-voucher registration for Olmaa, Enkorien, Murkan and Olchobosei cooperative societies; three phase electricity connection for Muntekuar Cooperative Society; and support Artificial Insemination Services for Transmara East Dairy Cooperative Society.
At Nkoilale trading center, ten (10) farmers cooperatives including Lanyuak Farmers Cooperatives, Nairagie Enkare Farmers Cooperative, Nalepo Olepolos Farmers Cooperative, Olmekenyu Farmers Cooperative and Narok Tomato Farmers Cooperatives, among other cooperative societies received cheques that will go towards supporting the actvities of their various Saccos.
Vaccination will be undertaken after farmers have registered their animals in the E-voucher system and undergone sensitization. Ordinarily, vaccination against FMD costs Ksh 160 per cow. However, under this program with a new subsidy, the Government will cover Ksh 110, allowing farmers to only contribute Ksh 50 per cow.
The programme will be coordinated at the ward level through existing farmer cooperatives under NAVCDP. Each ward will establish a committee comprising farmers’ representatives, Chiefs, Ward Administrators, and Livestock Extension Officers to oversee its effective implementation.
